This framework should assist you in understanding the differences among physicians.  Use this framework to help you choose a plastic surgeon.

EDUCATION & TRAINING

Education does not directly indicate skill; however, education and training does indicate the foundation upon which a physician builds his practice.   The best education and the best training indicate drive, intelligence and ultimately success.

ACCREDITATION

The only certification that requires your physician to pass an initial surgery exam is certification from the AMERICAN BOARD OF PLASTIC SURGERY!  In addition, this certification requires renewal every 7 years through the same rigorous testing process.   Any physician may perform plastic surgery and any physician can purchase most of the certifications you commonly see as proof of skill or experience.

EXPERIENCE

Many plastic surgery procedures can help your transformation.  Plastic surgery is an art and each patient is different.  You must choose a physician that is comfortable offering you options and you must be comfortable with the expected results.  Make sure that your physician regularly performs the procedures that you choose and that you have access to adequate referrals.  Education is not a substitution for experience.

PRICE

Plastic surgery permanently transforms your body.  Often, physicians who offer deeply discounted procedures, choose less expensive facilities, support staff and materials.  Understand the tradeoffs in price versus safety, skill, materials and experience.  Understand what your surgeon is offering for the price he is charging.
